Sugar Queen Red and White Winter Wedding Inspiration

Another Tuesday – another Sarah Addison Allen post! Today’s feature focuses on her second book, The Sugar Queen. I’ve always had a soft spot for The Sugar Queen because it takes place in the mountains, in the fictional resort town of Bald Slope, but it’s still infused with the Southern charms of all her stories. The town comes alive as winter sets in, creating an enchanted, snowy landscape. In The Sugar Queen, red stands for passion and possibility, sweets are almost, but not quite, equal to love, and books hold their own special magic. Vivid red, with hints of peppermint, perfectly complements a winter wedding with a background of snowy white.

In last week’s board for Garden Spells, I mentioned books coming into your life exactly when you need them. In The Sugar Queen, that’s exactly what happens to one of the main characters, who is followed by books that have very particular ideas about just what she needs. Her new friend lives a sheltered life, punctuated briefly by flashes of brilliant red and filled with longing for love and adventure. She fills those empty spaces with sweets until the events of the book begin to unfold, and any reading of this book will make you long for sugary treats. I thought it would be a fun nod to the story to include sweets that actually say they love you!
