DIY Gold Glitter Mug for Mr. Right and Mrs. Always Right

I am so excited to share my first tutorial for this adorable DIY gold glitter mug design! Partnering with Cricut has been an amazing way to indulge my passion for graphic design and combine it with what I’m building with this blog. I created this design with a wedding present for a very sweet friend in mind and today’s post tweaked it to create a shareable version! Read on for a DIY tutorial to create these adorable glitter mugs for Mr. Right and Mrs. Always Right!

Creating Iron on Transfers in Gold Glitter

To create the design on a Cricut, upload the designs into the Design Space – see the bottom of the post for the free design downloads! I used a soft cloth measuring tape to measure the curved surface of my mugs to decide exactly how large I wanted to make them. Since the Mrs. design is slightly longer, I kept the width consistent for each one, with 2.5″ adding just the right amount of coverage on the tapered mug.

I went with the Iron-On Glitter in gold as it creates a semi-permanent design that can be washed and reused, and my mornings can always use a little sparkle! The iron-on vinyl comes in roll, so I measured and cut the amount that I would need to make sure I didn’t waste any. Using the Standard grip mat, I loaded the vinyl and selected the Iron-On Glitter setting on my Cricut Design Space. Make sure to check the box to flip the design before cutting!

Gold Sparkles for a Cute DIY Mug

After cutting out my designs, I peeled away the excess vinyl, using the Weeding Tool to navigate around the swashes of my script lettering. Once my two separate designs were cut out, I snipped the clear backing around the lettering – see below for an example!DIY Iron On Gold Glitter Mugs

Adding small slashes to the rectangular design made it so much easier to smooth them against the curved surface of the mug and make sure that the entire design was pressed flat. I used the Cricut smoothing tool to go over the clear backing and press down every curl and swash before going over it with an Iron.

Following the instructions on the Iron-On Vinyl, I used the hottest setting on my iron before going over the backing. The instructions also specified to heat the surface before transfer, so I popped the ceramic mug in the microwave for 20 seconds before applying the vinyl. I found that setting my mug against the adhesive of the cutting mat helped to keep it from rolling as I smoothed and ironed the design! Go over the design fully, over and over, to ensure that it is firmly set.

Once the design is secured, gently peel away the strips of the clear backing to remove it and leave the design intact! I’d recommend allowing the design to set for at least 24 hours before washing to help the design ‘cure’ – another spin in the microwave didn’t hurt, either! The fully set vinyl should be top-shelf dishwasher safe, although hand washing will definitely prolong the lifespan of this adorable gold glitter mug set!
