Satisfy your wanderlust at home with today’s DIY Map Canvas tutorial! This gorgeous chalkboard wall art is the perfect way to commemorate your honeymoon, your latest travels, or your next trip. I partnered with Cricut to design a honeymoon keepsake that will showcase where you’ve been and where you want to go next – read on for the tutorial, and a chance to win a luxury all-inclusive trip to the Caribbean with Sandals Resorts!
To create your own personalized map canvas, you’ll need the following materials:
- A canvas of your choice for the base
- Cricut Chalkboard Vinyl for the map
- Cricut Metallic Vinyl in the color of your choice for the lettering
- Cricut Transfer Tape
- High Resolution Map Designs
- Script Font – I used November Starlight
- Canon PIXMA iP8720 Crafting Printer to print out your favorite travel photos
- Cricut 12 x 24” Mat
Using high-resolution map images, I plotted out my design to best suit the space of my canvas. Center your design around a country or continent to commemorate a special trip, or go with a full globe design to track your travels! I went with an 18 x 24” canvas to fit as much of world in as I could!
The Cricut’s precision cutting blade made it easy to cut out the edges of each continent and the smaller islands, resulting in a fully detailed map. I used a longer 12 x 24” Mat for my chalkboard vinyl so I only had to cut out two sets of continents in order to fill up my canvas. Plot out your designs to fit the space on your mat, and create multiple transfers if needed.
Once I cut out my selected continents, I used the weeding tool to remove the negative space from my mat, and keep the little details in place.
Once my designs were cut out, I used Transfer Tape to separate the map images from the backing. Following the Transfer Tape instructions, I cut a piece to fit my design and lay the adhesive side down over the finished designs. Using the Cricut scraper, I burnished down the tape before slowly peeling it up, along with my design.
The chalkboard vinyl adheres perfectly to the canvas backing! Once my continents were in place, I cut my lettering out of metallic gold vinyl and placed it over the chalkboard designs for a clean and bold accent! Download my ‘There’s Such a Lot of World To See’ lettering for free! download
I wanted to create a full travel wall to go with my new map canvas, so I printed some of my favorite photos on my Canon Pixma Crafting Printer. A slim metallic frame matched the lettering on my canvas to create a collage wall that showed off some gorgeous travel photos! Mark where you’ve been or where you want to go on the chalkboard vinyl and fill the wall up with photos from your incredible travels!
