Who knew a school-colors wedding theme would turn out so beautifully? Texas Longhorn Kelly married Auburn alum John and their shared school color – orange combined with a vintage mauve – inspired the stunning hues of their Forth Worth wedding day! With a historical venue setting the scene for these vintage-lovers, their wedding at BRIK Venue combined gorgeous flower arrangements, bright green vines, a glittering fit and flare wedding dress, and the powerhouse team of Sarah Lanette Photography and Shannon Rose Events for an unforgettable wedding day!
Who knew a College Football Wedding Could be so Chic?
The touches of orange in their wedding colors were inspired by both of their alma maters – she’s a Texas Longhorn graduate and he went to Auburn. The common color became a clear winner for their wedding color scheme, and they added touches of vintage mauve to play off the subtle earth tone orange they used throughout their wedding day.
Sending love to Texas! Kelly had a silhouette of her home state stitched in her wedding dress with their wedding date on Valentine’s Day, 2020. The sentimental detail was also a sweet heirloom from her family!
When my mom and dad got married, it was not the first marriage for either one of them. My mom did not have a white wedding dress – it was blue. She still has it and took out the bottom hem of the dress and used the thread from it to sew the outline of Texas onto a piece of cloth. She also hand stitched “Kelly & John” using the font from our wedding invitation. This was my “something blue” for my wedding day.
It was so special to have something from my parent’s wedding at my own and something that was handmade from my mom. She sewed this into the underlining of my wedding dress! After the wedding we removed it from my dress and I had it framed. It is now hanging in our house and something that I will cherish forever.
How she chose her wedding dress –
I wanted my wedding dress to be something that I felt confident in and something that was out of the norm of my comfort zone. I know that sounds interesting for a bride’s wedding day, but I wanted it to be something that I would have never dreamed I would have picked!
I went with a fit and flare and it was not a style that I had originally been looking at. It was beautiful and covered in lace and sparkle. I knew it was the one the moment I looked in the mirror.
On the vintage mauve bridesmaid dresses Kelly chose –
For my bridesmaids, I wanted to make sure that they all felt comfortable in their dresses. Each could pick their own style in the color that I chose. The online company that we went with allows you to get try on samples in different dress styles! It was perfect and they all could choose the dress that made them feel the most comfortable.
How they chose their Forth Worth wedding venue –
John and I live in Huntsville, Alabama in an area with historical homes. We love old vintage places and wanted our venue to reflect that. We chose an old warehouse from the 1920s in downtown Ft. Worth. It had original wood floors, high ceilings and exposed beams.
The rustic industrial style of their ceremony at BRIK Venue offered a gorgeous weathered brick backdrop with winter vines to make a stunning place for wedding party photos!
How they met and became engaged –
We met through my best friend. Her boyfriend, (now husband), introduced me to John, which was his friend. They all lived in Alabama and every summer I would go and visit them. John and I were friends for years before we started dating. Being that I was from Texas, the long distance thing was hard. However, being several states away from each other couldn’t keep us apart and we finally became a couple!
I had moved from Texas to Alabama about 3 years ago. John knows that Texas holds a special place in my heart. Last summer we went to visit my family and he totally surprised me when we were there. He proposed at my parent’s house. I walked out of the kitchen into the living room and he was down on one knee! It was really sweet and completely caught me off guard! John is not really a planner, so if he had “suggested” we go away for a weekend, I would have know what was up. The way he did it made sure that I had no idea it was coming!
The couple incorporated vintage pieces into their wedding day, like the copper wall tile they used as a seating chart!
The long dining tables inside the reception hall offered an industrial farmhouse setting with iron and barnwood surfaces. Their florist used a mix of tall glass vases with elevated arrangements and taper candles to add warmth in their signature vintage mauve color. The bridesmaid bouquets from the ceremony were also repurposed into the table decor to get the most out of their flowers!
I think our wedding cake was honestly the best cake I have ever had and I am not just saying that because it was our wedding! It was so moist and the icing was perfect. We went with a 4 tiered round cake. It was simple and had flowers on a few of the tiers. The main tier was a vanilla almond cake with cream cheese buttercream frosting. We also had another tier that was strawberry cake with strawberry filling and buttercream frosting.
John is a duck hunter and his grooms cake was a 2 tiered round cake with an edible duck made out of fondant. It was a chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream frosting. We of course had leftovers and at our family gathering the rest of the weekend we ate them. I have never heard so many people rave over how good a cake was!
