Bridal Style Watch 2014 - Layering it On

It’s only day three of my Bridal Market coverage and I’m already dreaming about wedding dresses! So many stunning creations walked down the runway last week and now they’re parading through my subconscious. Never fear, I’m intrepidly moving forward with my 2014 Bridal Style Watch showcasing some of the most fabulous new trends for next year’s brides – today I’m loving how many designers chose to add depth to their gowns with frothy, extravagant layers!

Whether it’s a simple spin on last year’s style must-have peplum by adding a partial over skirt, masterfully showcased by Christos and Claire Pettibone, or draping tulle over lace like Marchesa, bridal designers started off with delicate overlays before slowly amping up the volume. Austin Scarlett added draping reminiscent of elaborately crafted fascinators and millinery to gorgeous effect, while Hayley Paige played with various levels of laying to add shape and definition to ubiquitous bridal silhouettes.

Ballgowns are given added shape with delicate, asymmetrical layers – I love the gentle drapery on full-skirted gowns by Ines di Santo and Judd Waddell, which manage to combine ethereal chiffon with high-impact drama. Anne Barge offered cascading layers of lace for one of my favorite versions of this trend! Not to be outdone, Reem Acra and Lazaro both went with sheer borders and romantic appliqués to add a flirty yet modern touch to their gowns. And last, but in no way least, Oscar de la Renta rounds up this collection with fabulously sculptural layers!
