When it comes to bridal fashion, the sweetheart neckline is the darling of many a designer.Strapless, dressed up with cap or lace sleeves, on a sleek column or voluminous ballgown, it’s a versatile classic. One of the fabulous things about a new bridal season is seeing talented designers put a new spin on an old favorite and this year saw a gorgeous crop of bateau necklines walk down the runway – as a sheer compliment to a sweetheart neckline, a glittering addition to a gown, and in some fabulous cases, an extravagant jeweled bolero combining dress and statement necklace in one!
I’ve rounded up some a breadth of gorgeous gowns with bateau – or boatneck – necklines that walked down the runways at Bridal Fashion Week. With such a wealth of designers to choose from, they range from delicate, lacy necklines that evoke a sweet preppy style, like Anne Barge, Ramona Keveza, and Kelly Faetanini, a gorgeous laser cut example by Siri that brings a modern edge, and luxuriously textured couture by Rivini and Temperley! My personal favorite: the slinky, beaded sheath by Dennis Basso that balances a high neckline with sleek lines and a high slit.
If bold is more your style, many designers ran with a lace-inspired jeweled neckline that bridal markets have been clamoring for in the wake of BHLDN’s Harlow gown. Marchesa came out with a stunning version in delicately pleated silk chiffon that will be sure to have many a high fashion bride eagerly Pinning. Nicole Miller, Reem Acra, and Cristiano Lucci all put their own spin on the design with a higher emphasis on sparkle, but I think the latter may be my favorite for the elaborately beaded neckline and cap sleeves. Still not enough sparkle for you? Some designers chose a more free-form approach to the high neck with strung crystals to imitate the lines while leaving plenty of skin bare. Prime examples include Sottero & Midgley, Hayley Paige, and particularly daring designs by Johanna Johnson!
What do you think of this stunning trend for 2014? Would you opt for a sweetly modest neckline or something that just gives the illusion? Speaking of – don’t miss tomorrow’s feature for more Bridal Market trends!
