Today’s rustic industrial wedding inspiration goes out to everyone else who is completely obsessed with HGTV’s Fixer Upper! My boyfriend and I are hooked on the show, thanks to a combination of the gorgeous home renovations, absurdly low Texas housing pricing, and the goofy charm of Chip and Joanna. We created our own drinking game to go along with the show – ‘shiplap’ and ‘open this wall up’ feature prominently – and being the weirdo that I am, I went ahead and created a wedding inspiration board to go with it!
This show has become a weekly ritual for us, although housing costs in the Bay Area make it just as frustrating as it is enjoyable. We like placing bets on which house the couple will pick, along with the number of stray animals Chip will bring home and the number of times he’ll mention his height. The official rules of the drinking game were set in writing after a half dozen episodes, although following them to the letter would end in regret. I might be enjoying a beer while writing this, not to mention their latest gorgeous remodel, but feel free to enjoy today’s wedding inspiration with or without a beverage in hand!
Turning a TV show into wedding inspiration is always a fun challenge, but the strong aesthetic of Fixer Upper makes an indelible impression. The mix of country chic and modern industrial is a nod to the blending of Chip and Joanna’s skill sets – his construction know-how and love of Demo Day, and her always charming home designs. Pergolas, shiplap, and giant metal letters featured heavily in her early season designs, but she’s consistently known for a homey yet sophisticated style with lots of Southern charm.
I wanted to work in some of the elements that her designs are best known for – gorgeous light fixtures, custom wood designs, and a subtle use of color, while giving them a wedding spin. Think a wedding day focused on hospitality with gracious Southern style – from a palette of aqua blue and peach to a grand Kings table for guests to sit around. Cast iron light fixtures draped with greenery add just the right amount of industrial flair to a barn setting (dressed in shiplap, naturally), while hand lettered escort cards and simple frosted treats invite guests to feel right at home!
